6.4L Power Stroke Injector Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and Solving Common Problems
The 6.4L Power Stroke (Ford, 2008–2010) moved to a twin-turbo, common-rail piezo injection system. Its injectors are a known wear item, and a failing injector can over-fuel a cylinder — which on this engine is worth catching early.
Common symptoms
- Rough idle, miss, or knock.
- White or black smoke (white from incomplete combustion, black from over-fueling).
- Hard cold start.
- Fuel in the engine oil / rising oil level — a serious warning sign on the 6.4.
- Loss of power and poor economy.
How to diagnose it
- Scan for codes and review cylinder contribution data to isolate the cylinder(s).
- Check oil level and smell — fuel dilution points to a leaking injector and should be addressed promptly.
- Confirm fuel-rail pressure against spec.
- Rule out the basics — fuel filters (the 6.4 has two), fuel supply, and battery health.
Repair notes
6.4 injectors are commonly serviced as a set. Because fuel dilution of the oil can lead to bigger engine damage, don't defer a confirmed leaking injector.
Before you order: verify the exact injector by OEM cross-reference for your truck.
