6.6L L5P Duramax Injector & HP4 Pump Troubleshooting: Diagnosing Common Problems

The L5P Duramax (2017+, 6.6L) was a clean-sheet redesign of GM's fuel system. Unlike the 2011–2016 LML, the L5P does not use the Bosch CP4 — it runs a Denso HP4 high-pressure pump, solenoid-style injectors, and a factory lift pump, feeding a common-rail system that runs around 29,000 psi. That redesign improved durability, but the injectors and high-pressure components are still wear items worth diagnosing correctly before you spend money.

Common symptoms

  • Hard start or long crank.
  • Rough idle, miss, or knock on one or more cylinders.
  • White or black smoke (white from incomplete combustion, black from over-fueling).
  • Power loss, limp mode, or fuel-rail-pressure fault codes.
  • Fuel in the engine oil (rising oil level) — a serious warning sign.

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan for codes and review injector balance / cylinder contribution data to isolate a specific cylinder.
  2. Check commanded vs. actual fuel-rail pressure against spec — a pump or regulator problem shows up here.
  3. Confirm the lift pump and fuel supply are delivering adequate volume and pressure; the L5P relies on its factory lift pump.
  4. Check oil level and condition — fuel dilution points to a leaking injector.
  5. Rule out the basics — fuel filter condition and water in the fuel.

Repair notes

L5P injectors are commonly serviced as a set when several show wear. Because the L5P uses the Denso HP4 rather than the CP4, it doesn't carry the same catastrophic metal-contamination reputation — but a failed high-pressure pump or injector should still be diagnosed and addressed promptly.
