The 6.7L Cummins is a high-mileage diesel, but the injectors still wear over time, and when they do the symptoms can look a lot like other fuel-system faults. This guide walks through the common 6.7 Cummins injector problems, how to tell them apart from a fuel-supply issue, and how to confirm a bad injector before you replace anything.
Common 6.7 Cummins injector symptoms
- Loss of power. A clogged or worn injector, poor fuel delivery, or internal injector damage all show up as a noticeable drop in power β often first felt under load or towing.
- Black smoke. Excess black smoke points to incomplete combustion, commonly from an injector that over-fuels or atomizes poorly.
- Rough idle and vibration. A worn or clogged injector throws off one cylinder's contribution, and the engine loses its even idle.
- Hard starting or long crank. An injector that leaks down bleeds off rail pressure, so the engine cranks longer before it lights.
- Knock or injector rattle. Fuel delivered at the wrong time or quantity produces a hard combustion knock.
- Fuel in the oil / rising oil level. A cracked injector body or nozzle that won't seal can wash fuel into the crankcase. If the dipstick reads high and smells of diesel, diagnose it before driving further.
Rule out the fuel supply first
Before condemning injectors, make sure the engine is actually getting the fuel pressure it needs. A clogged fuel filter, a weak lift pump, or a tired CP3 high-pressure pump can produce power loss and hard starts that feel like injector problems β and will often log a P0087 (rail pressure too low) code. Diagnosing injector problems
- Read the trouble codes. The onboard diagnostics can log injector-circuit and cylinder-specific codes that point you to the affected cylinder.
- Check per-cylinder data. A scan tool that shows injector balance or contribution rates will flag an injector that's over- or under-delivering.
- Run an injector return (spill) test. Measuring how much fuel each injector returns highlights one that's leaking internally β the high-return injector is usually the culprit.
- Visual inspection. Look for wet fuel at the hold-downs, lines, and connectors, plus damaged wiring, before assuming an internal fault.
Solving and preventing injector problems
- Cleaning vs. replacement. Light deposits can sometimes be addressed, but an injector with internal wear, a cracked body, or nozzle stiction needs replacing.
- Replace as a matched set. Injectors wear at a similar rate, so when one 6.7 injector fails the others are usually close behind. A matched set restores an even idle and consistent power.
- Stay ahead of it. Regular fuel-filter changes and clean, quality fuel are the biggest factors in injector life. Contaminated fuel is the fastest way to ruin a fresh set.
